Roman coins that were first introduced around 211 BCE along with the denarii. During the Roman Republic they were small, silver coins valued at one quarter of a denarius. In 23 BCE, in the monetary reform of Augustus, the sestertii were reintroduced as the largest brass denomination. They were worth four assaria and valued still at one quarter of a denarius.
Ρωμαϊκά νομίσματα που εισήχθησαν γύρω στο 211 π.Χ. μαζί με τα δηνάρια. Στην περίοδο της δημοκρατίας ήταν μικρά, αργυρά νομίσματα που αντιστοιχούσαν στο 1/4 του δηναρίου. Με τη νομισματική μεταρρύθμιση του Αυγούστου το 23 π.Χ. οι σηστέρτιοι εξελίχθηκαν στα χάλκινα νομίσματα με την μεγαλύτερη αξία που ισοδυναμούσαν με τέσσερα ασσάρια και αντιστοιχούσαν πάλι στο 1/4 του δηναρίου.
