Concept information

Preferred term

total covarage

Definition

  • Conventional three-band photography from an airborne platform. Its operating principle is based on the detection of reflected electromagnetic radiation between 400 nm and 700 nm (i.e. light), sometimes extended with one near-infrared band (between 700 nm and 1100 nm). The total coverage approach aims at photographing a complete area and is usually used for (non-archaeological) mapping projects. It therefore contrast with the observer-directed approach which is prevalent in archaeology. This approach can yield both vertical and as well oblique images.
