electron probe microanalysis (EPMA)
DEFINITION
  • A method examining the surface by combining spectrographic analysis and microscopic studies. Archaeological applications typically fall into three categories: the identification or confirmation of archaeological materials in thin section; chemical characterisation of the soil fine mass often with the aim of determining its source(s); and analysis of the taphonomic alteration of archaeological materials.
