atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS)
Definition
- Quantitative technique of chemical analysis applicable to metals, ceramics, glass and lithics for major, minor and trace element analysis. The technique relies on the principle that electron energy level changes in atoms may be stimulated by the absorption of light at element-specific wavelengths. A small sample is required, typically 10 mg when applied to metals, and usually this must be in solution.
