Preferred term

2217Terrorist groups

Scope note

  • Organised groups that engage in planning and executing terrorist attacks. Many terrorist organsations are the result of a split between moderate and radical wings of an already existing political or religious organisation. Generalised political and social unrest, as well as the alienation of parts of the population from dominant ideological, social, economic, and political structures play an important role in the formation of terrorist organisations. Terrorist organisations function as conspiratorial groups; they may receive overt or covert support from networks of sympathisers, from political organisations, from the media, from economic agents, or even from state and deep-state organisations.
