Scope note

  • Formal institutions with a restricted membership, which were founded in 17th century Europe, aiming mostly at the advancement of all the natural sciences (which were summarised in the terms "natural philosophy" and "natural history"), particularly through the communication and mutual encouragement of its members. Scientific academies had a crucial role in the organisation of modern science within the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment, until at least the early 19th century and the emergence of specialised and professional scientific societies and the establishment of scientific institutes and departments in the higher schools and universities.
