Scope note

  • Member of the commission sent by the Greek cities in antiquity as representatives at the Amphictyony councils (Pylaiai). His duties were to take care of matters concerning the sanctuary which was the center of each Amphictyony. As the Amphictyonies, besides being religious, also ended up being political in nature, the Hieromnemones had the jurisdiction to punish or even to proclaim a sacred war against cities that would try to abandon the Amphictyony.
