Scope note

  • Schisms are complex events that lead to the splitting of a more or less unified religious group and organisation into two or more distinct parts. Schisms arise out of conflict and controversy not only on theological, but mainly on political and social issues. The opposite groups that emerge from schisms often stigmatise one another as heretic or schismatic, and claim for themselves dogmatic purity and institutional legitimacy.
