Scope note

  • The highest political office in some of the Italian city-states (Venice, Genoa) during the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The selection of the doge was effectuated by an electoral body which became increasingly oligarchic in the early modern period. The doge, a member of a powerful family of the city, was surrounded by institutional bodies that in fact limited his power and autonomy. The doge of Venice, the most important version of the office, developed into a figure that expressed symbolically and ceremoniously the city itself and its position in the world.
