Scope note
- Door-to -door ice sellers. Prior to the use of electric refrigerators for food preservation, the ice sellers walked around in neighborhoods with a three-wheeled cart, a specially shaped cart, or a donkey full of ice blocks made by means of a special ice-making process. The ice sellers supplied not only houses but also small shops. They wore gloves to keep their hands from freezing and handled a special hook-cutter, with which they held the ice, cut it and carried it. The ice was then placed in brick or wooden refrigerators. Families used these refrigerators to preserve their food and to ensure cool water in the summer.
