Scope note

  • Form of improvisational folk theatre with a century- long course from Asia tο the Mediterranean. It is based in orality (memorisation), empirical learning (artistry) and is a primarily collective anonymous creation. It is performed with flat articulated cut-out figures painted on paper, leather or other material against a white screen lighted from the back. The artists of shadow theatre move the figures, the result being that the audience sees the silhouettes or/and the colours -depending of the figures used. The Greek shadow theatre is Karagiozis, deriving from the Turkish Karagöz.
