Entry terms

  • Philosophy of nature

Scope note

  • The philosophical investigation of nature. Natural philosophy has its origins in antiquity, focusing on causes of natural phenomena and eliminating the divine element from its explanations. During the Scientific Revolution (16th-17th century) it incorporated various traditions and methodologies, such as experimental philosophy, mechanistic philosophy and the mathematization/ quantification of nature. Until the early 19th century, when the term "science" began to prevail, natural philosophy was the main term in use for a wide range of scientific areas, including mathematics, astronomy, physics, optics, medicine and natural history, that today fall into the sphere of exact and natural sciences.
