Scope note
- Sciences that study social phenomena and relations, using a range of research methods (qualitative and quantitative), tools and approaches. They include the disciplines of economics, political sciences, sociology, social anthropology and ethnography; they claim law and psychology; and at their boundaries they meet with the fields of history (social history), biology (sociobiology), geography (social geography), philosophy (social philosophy), linguistics (sociolinguistics) etc. The idea of social sciences as a "family" of disciplines that focus on various aspects of human society emerged in the second half of the 19th century, following the example of empiricist methods of natural sciences.
