Scope note

  • A historical process involving a fundamental shift or transformation in the spatial scale of human social organisation that links distant communities and expands the reach of power relations across regions and continents. This radical shift  refers to every sector of social life, such as politics, economy, technology, production, environmental issues, international law, security, human rights etc. The term is also used in a narrower sense that focuses on economy, to describe a single world economy after the collapse of communism or to define the growing integration of the international capitalist system in the post-war period.
