Scope note
- Scientific instruments for measuring atmospheric pressure. The two main types are the mercury barometer and the aneroid barometer. The mercury barometer grew out of investigations and demonstations for the existence of vacuum in the first half of the 17th century and was later used as an instrument to measure the variation in pressure of the air and the heights. The aneroid barometer was constructed in the middle of the 19th century and became popular among mountaineers and mariners due to its robustness and portability.
