Scope note

  • An office that appears in city-states in ancient Greece. In particular, in Athens at the end of 413 BC, after the catastrophic Sicilian expendition, the Assembly chose ten elders, who were to exercise some of the duties of the Council and the prytaneis (that is, they would approve matters for discussion by the Assembly) and would propose measures for the salvation of the city.
