Scope note
- The study of extinct organisms, including their structure, environment, evolution and distribution as revealed by fossil flora and fauna. Paleontology emerged as a distinct area of investigation in the late 18th and early 19th centuries based on the admission that fossils are the remains of living beings and can be used to reconstruct the history of life on earth.
