Scope note

  • Scientific organisations that collect, cultivate and demonstrate diverse plant species, aiming mostly to promote scientific research and education. Botanical gardens were established in the early modern period as collections of plants useful in the education of medical students. In the 17th and 18th centuries they were enriched with rare and exotic plants from the Εuropean colonies, advancing scientific research in natural history and supporting scientific imperialism of colonial countries. From the 19th century onwards they also functioned as sites of entertainment and education for the wide public.
