Scope note
- Type of lottery for the election of members of the Council that appeared in the 5th century BC in Athens. The procedure was as follows: Two urns were set up. One contained the names of the members of the tribe who had put themselves forward as candidates. The other contained an equal number of beans, a number of white beans equal to the number of Council members, while the remaining beans were black. A name was then drawn from one urn and a bean from the other. If the bean was white, the candidate was selected, if it was black he was rejected.
