Scope note
- Types of comic servants, the zanni or zani of the improvisational Italian Commedia dell’ arte take on various names (Arlecchino, Scaramuccia, Pulcinella, Scapini etc.) and wear respective costumes and masks. In each scenario, that formed the canvas on which the performances were based, there was at least one pair of servants, who often played contrasting roles, the first a cunning and witty valet who carries the plot and the second a dull-witted foil, a simpleminded, awkward character, helping to highlight his partner's spirit.
