SCOPE NOTE
  • Organisations of monastic communities with common practices enforced by a centralised administration. The Christian monastic orders emerged in the 12th century in Western Christianity and have since then constituted an important factor in the organisation of Christian religious life and activity, particularly in the Catholic Church.
