Scope note

  • Οrganizations whose activities, functioning or membership are concealed from non-members. Secret societies have their own particular set of rituals and beliefs, their founding myth and their mission, that give the members a common ethos and sustain them as parts of a distinct collectivitiy. Secret societies can be elite or non-elite, defined by age, gender or profession; they can be religious, sectarian or political, subversive or deep-state. Their secrecy is due to issues of legality, elitism, and formation of niches and networks of influence and power. Secret societies, real and fictional, have very often been objects of conspiracy theories, propaganda and demonisation.
