Scope note
- One of the occasional liturgies associated with the naval power of ancient Athens. From the early 5th century the Athenian strategoi chose for one year from the wealthiest citizens a number of trierarchs corresponding to the number of triremes to be manned. The costs involved the expenses both for the repair and maintenance of the ship and for the food and payment of the crew. The institution of trierarchy was abolished in 307 BC.
