Scope note

  • Literature is any body of written or oral verbal works of a national or language community deemed to have an aesthetic value, often due to deploying language in ways that differ from ordinary usage. The term is used since the eighteenth century to designate fictional and imaginative writings. In Romance languages the term "literature" designates all types of collections of written work (including philosophy, history, or scientific works addressed to a general audience) that are especially distinguished in form and expression. In Greek the term applies more narrowly to written or oral verbal works of an aesthetic value.
