Scope note
- Bishop who is the head of a -usually major- ecclesiastical administrative unit (metropolis). The office originates in the early Christian era, when the metroplitan was the bishop of the capital of a Roman province. The position of the metropolitan vis-à-vis the closely related office of archbishop, as well as in the framework of the overall ecclesiastical adminisrtative system, differs in the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthoidox and Anglican Churches.
