Scope note
- The ruler of an empire, a state with a large territory and expansionary claims that rules over peoples and populations that differ in ethnic, religious and cultural terms. The emperor embodies the state's claims to universal domination and is regarded superior in status to other monarchs and rulers, such as kings. More often than not, emperors belong to a dynasty, which, in the case of the Ottoman Empire, may be identified with the state itself, while in other traditions, like the Roman one, the ascension of the emperor to power either is not inscribed in dynastic structures or does not depend only on dynastic continuity.
