Scope note
- Muslims who follow the branch of Imamiyya Shiism, the largest of the Shia traditions. The Imamiyyah Shiites, called also Twelvers, believe in 12 divinely inspired Imams descended from Muhammad through his daughter Fatima and her husband Ali, considered to be the first Imam. The Imams, regarded as exemplary authorities for the community and focal points for religious devotion, epitomise ideas of martyrdom and righteous suffering, which open the way to salvation . Accordings to Imamiyya Shiites, the 12th Imam, who has entered concealment, will be sent by God as a messianic redeemer who will inaugurate the rule of justice in anticipation of Judgment Day.
