Scope note
- Οriginally the ‘‘partisans’’ of Ali, Muhammad’s cousin and husband of the Prophet’s daughter, Fatima. Today, however, the term designates a number of distinct groups that have arisen over the course of Islamic history and which are united by a belief that the leader of the Muslim community should be a member of the Prophet’s family, and that this continuity in leadership is expressed through the line of the legitimate Muslim imams, distinct from the Sunni caliphs. Taken together, the Shiites represent more than 10 percent of the world's Muslim population.
