Scope note
- The largest Islamic community, which comprises approximately 80% of the Muslims worldwide. The Sunnites follow the tradition of Sunnah, which adopts the traditional practices of the Islamic communities on the basis of the example of prophet Muhammad and his companions. Many Sunnites regard themselves as the "orthodox" branch of Islam in contrast to the Shiites. They acknowledge the first four caliphs as legitimate successors of the prophet, as well as the legitimacy of the Ummayad and Abbasid caliphates. The Sunnites are in turn divided in four legal traditions (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii and Hanbali) that display different approaches in the interpetation of Islamic law and in the sociopoliitical practices they endorse.
