Scope note
- Wars aiming at acquiring autonomy or independence for a part of a sovereign state. Secession wars are fought by a national, ethnic, or religious group, included within a sovereign state, which aims at breaking away from this state (a process understood usually as liberation) and sometimes at merging with another state.
