Scope note
- Wars in which the belligerents mobilise all available resources, material and human, and use all available means in order to achieve victory, a process viewed as a struggle for survival. As a rule, total wars have an open-ended and evolving set of goals, which includes the annihilation of the opponent and his coersion into acceptance of a new sociopolitical order. At the same time, the total mobilisation and control of resources has a significant and long-lasting impact on the relationship between political power, society and economy.
