Scope note

  • Wars in which the combatants regard each other as being religiously different; use the elimination of religious difference as a motive or justification for conducting war; use religious ideas and concepts in the discourse on war; use specific practices in conducting war that highlight religious difference; are connected to opposing religious institutions; and form military alliances according to religious boundaries. Religious wars lead to serious consequences with regard to religious behavior, culminating in the prohibition or the imposition of a religion in state territories, often in connection with relocation of populations.
