Scope note

  • Christians who follow the Oriental Orthodox Church of Ethiopia, a miaphysite Church that until the 20th century was administratively included in the Coptic Church. Ethiopian Orthodox Christians trace their Church in the time of Christ's apostles, who preached in Ethiopia. In the 4th century Christianity was proclaimed state religion of the Ethiopian Kingdom of Aksum and the Church of Ethiopia was incorporated in the Egyptian Church with Frumentius from Syria as its bishop. Liturgical language of the Church is the ancient Ethiopian Ge'ez. Ethiopian Orthodox Christians constitute the largest community in the framework of Oriental Orthodox Christianity.
