Scope note
- Bronze Roman coins of the Republican and Imperial period. They were first issued around 280 BCE as large cast coins. As their weight was gradually reduced they switched from being cast to being struck. They had subdivisions and multiples and they continued to circulate until the 3rd c. CE. The Greek term "assarion" is often used in ancient texts to denote the bronze Greek provincial coins issued during the Imperial period.
