Scope note
- Groups of coins that have been withdrawn from circulation and deliberately brought together (but not necessarily deliberately placed in the ground). Hoards were traditionally divided into four basic categories: accidental losses, savings hoards (that sometimes represent many years of savings), emergency hoards (e.g. in the face of a military attack), and, finally, abandoned hoards (e.g. foundation hoards or burial hoards). This strict categorisation however, is now considered problematic by many scholars.
