The relative adverbs 'where', 'when' and 'why' can be used to join sentences or clauses. They replace the more formal structure of preposition, which is used to introduce a relative clause. Relative clauses cannot stand alone. These are incomplete thoughts and should be joined to an independent clause to become a complete sentence.
