Scope note
- Subdivision of drama that draws on history in order to throw light on events or people that determined the course of a nation or a certain period. In ages of crisis or major developments, didactics and the enhancement of national identity and continuity of peoples play a prominent role, while during the 20th century playwrights exploited historical material to trace its relations to the contemporary social reality and to delve into philosophical or existential questions.
