Scope note
- The term denotes the arts based on the performance (representation) or re-presentation of their materials. They are characterised by their dual structure: the representing (the stage etc.) and the represented (figurative or symbolised reality). They comprise arts that produce performances or performing events such as theatre, dance, music, opera, operetta, circus, puppet theatre, but also mass media arts using mechanical devices and multimedia such as cinema television or radio.
