Scope note

  • Form of theatre that tried to apply dialectical thought in dramaturgy and scenic action, although epic features existed before in theatre history. Its main structural elements are the denial of the Aristotelian contradiction between epic and dramatic poetry, the appeal to the audience’s intellect and not to sentiment, the dominance of reason instead of the emotional identification of the spectator resulting in the mobilisation of his critical thinking. Dominant in this theatre is the notion of alienation effect extending from acting to adopting stage and dramaturgic techniques that break the unity of the performed play.
