Scope note
- Abbreviations for words, which were repeated frequently in epigraphic texts. These words were familiar to all and the use of their abbreviation would not cause confusion. This method was used by scribes of ancient texts mainly for reasons of space. For example, in Attic inscriptions it was common practise to abbreviate the name of a citizen's deme (e.g. ΛΑΜ instead of Λαμ(πτρεύς) (= from the deme of Lamptrai).
