Scope note

  • Major component of environmental philosophy that constitutes a domain of applied ethics and addresses the normative significance of the relations between human beings and their non-human environment. At the heart of environmental ethics lies the attempt to articulate the basis of concern for the natural world, wherein an "intrinsic value" is recognized. Some of the issues it debates are how to balance the claims of present and future, human and non-human, sentient and non-sentient beings, individuals and wholes, as well as the prospects for a sustainable relationship between economic and ecological systems, taking into consideration its implications with respect to social justice and political institutions.
