Scope note
- Copper Byzantine coins that were first introduced in 1092 CE by Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118 CE) to replace the old follis. Their exact value is still a matter of controversy. From the reign of Andronicus II (1282-1328 CE) onwards they were replaced by a copper coin that came to be called an assarion, after the Roman coins.
