Scope note
- Members of a prominent urban social group that constituted an administrative aristocracy, had a monopoly over communal offices, and reproduced its power through family and patronage networks. The cittadini emerged as a distinct oligarchic group in the Ionian Islands under Venetian rule, particularly from the 16th century onwards.
