Scope note
- Organisations that, in their modern form, date back to the 18th century. They aim at providing medical care and treatment, in the context either of state policy or of private initiative. These institutions have evolved as places of medical research and teaching, interacting with processes such as scientific specialisation, professionalisation of medicine and technical constitution of medical knowledge and practice. They have also contributed to recalibrating the medical "discourse" about disease.
