Scope note
- Intentional and coordinated actions aiming at the total -or to a great extent- elimination of an ethnic or national group from regions that either belong to a state's territory or are under its control in conditions of military occupation during war. Ethnic cleansing is pursued through mass murder by military or paramilitary groups, through forced expatriation, deportation and emigration, or (most often) through a combination of the above. The term is widely used after the ethnic conflicts that took place during the civil war of Yugoslavia.
