1814Synods (collective bodies)
Broader concept
Scope note
- Church bodies that meet relatively regularly and either constitute the main administrative authority of the Church or advise it on matters of faith, order, and government. We must disitniguish between synods of ordained ministers (bishops or clergy) and synods in which lay members have an equal say. We must also distinguish between synods that give council to a higher authority and synods that have a binding right of decision in their own domain, as well as between synods of the whole Church and synods at a lesser level.
