Scope note

  • An office that first appears in ancient Athens during the times of Athenian politician Cleisthenes. The office of prytanis was assumed by members of the Council of Five Hundred who constituted a prytany. Their main tasks were to determine the matters on which the Council was to decide and to draw up the agenda for meetings of the Assembly.
