Scope note

  • The scientific study of plants, including their anatomy, morphology, physiology, biochemistry, taxonomy, cytology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and geographical distribution. From the antiquity until the 17th century, botany was closely knit with the practice of medicine and the use of herbs in the making of remedies. The invention of the microscope in the 17th century directed research to the morphology of plants and later to their anatomy, whereas the classification systems of the 18th century were also of great importance for the development of botany.
