Entry terms

  • Jacobites

Scope note

  • Christians who follow the Syriac Oriental Orthodox Church of Antioch, a miaphysite Church which goes back to Jacob Baradaeus, a missionary and bishop of Edessa (6th century), and which suffered persecution by the Byzantine emperors. Syriac Orthodox Christians consider their Church in terms of succession from the bishopric of Antioch, established by the apostle Peter. Scholars of the Syriac Church were crucial in the translation of works of the ancient Greek literature into Arabic. Syriac Orthodox Christians use the Syriac rite in the Syriac-Aramaic language. Besides the Middle East, they live in India, as well as in diasporic communities all over the world.
