Scope note
- Coins that, instead of being struck in a blank flan, were struck on coins that were already in circulation. Sometimes overstriking had not obliterated the original coin or undertype completely, and detailed examination enables both undertype and overtype to be identified. Overstriking often occurred after the withdrawal of older coins or in cities that had no precious metals in order to mint their own currency.
